SHRI VARANG TIRTH

PRESIDING DEITY AND LOCATION :

Sri Parshvanath Bhagwan in a standing posture in a shrine at the base of a mountain covered by a forest of trees outside the temple of Varang in the middle of a lake. (A Lake-Temple) (Dig).

ANTIQUITY AND SALIENT FEATURES :

There is a reference available that Muni Shilavijayji came here on a pilgrimage in Vikram year 1711. It is said that this is an ancient shrine in Karnataka and that at once upon a time it was a very affluent city. A reference is also available that there were 60 temples on the adjacent mountain.

This temple is famous as a lake-temple of the south. Every Friday, hundreds of devotees gather here to offer prayers and to perform worship. According to them, by visiting this shrine, their every wish is fulfilled. The temple shikhar is built in an unique architectural style. This is a beautiful specimen of ancient art in the middle of sylvan surroundings and undisturbed peace. Besides this lake-temple there are two more temples nearby.

APPROACH – ROUTE :

This shrine is 68Kms away from Mangalore on Mangalore-Shimoga road and is 16Kms from Karkal. In Varang village, the temple is 500 meters from the bus stand. There is a tar road upto the lake. Country boats are available for going to temple in the lake. Mudbidri is 39Kms, Dharamsthal 92KMs, Venur 65Kms, Belur-Halebid 271Kms and Shravanbelgola is 351 Kms away from here.

AMENITIES FOR JAIN PILGRIMS :

At present there is no arrangement available for lodging here, but in emergency 25 people can stay in Jain Math here. Humbaj is the main headquarters.
