It is believed that the ancient Mahalakshmi temple of Kolhapur was originally a Jain temple and the Goddess was Padmavati Devi (now known as Mahalakshmi Devi). The carvings of Jain Tirthankars are also seen in the temple. The Kings of Silahara Dynasty, who reigned a 1,000 years ago were Jains and historians believe that the temple was built by them.
