SHRI BHOROL TIRTH

PRESIDING DEITY AND LOCATION :

Shri Neminath Bhagwan in black color seated in a lotus posture of height 76 Cms in a shrine located in the town of Bhorol (Shve).

ANTIQUITY AND SALIENT FEATURES :

From several ancient idols discovered here buried underneath the earth and old relics of the past, the antiquity of this shrine is evident. In the olden times, this shrine was known as Pipalpur, Pipalpur- Patan, Pipalgram etc., A reference is available that following religious discourses of Acharya Sri Punyatilaksurishvarji of Vallabhi branch of Anchalgachchha Shrimal Sheth Punjabshah of Katyayan gotra had built here outside the limits of the town an extra ordinarily huge temple with 1444 pillars for gods, goddesses and personalities of Jain religious and also had dug and built a special type of stepped well all at staggering cost of 12.5 million rupees in the Vikram year 1302. This well still exists today in a ruined condition. Near the pond in the temple of Hingalaj Mata, there exist a damaged idol of Sri Ambika Devi and also one damaged “Parikar”. On this frame, an inscription is found which states that on Jeth Sukla 2 in Vikram year 1261, the idol of Sri Neminath Bhagwan was ceremonially installed at the hands of Sri Jaiprabhsurihi. This is a testimony of the fact that there existed here a temple, before this large temple was built by Sheth Sri Punjashah.

From rock and stone inscriptions, it is evident that upto Vikram year 1355 this place was known as Pipalgram. It is possible that in Vikram year 1414 when Ramji Chouhan defeating local suvar Rajputs conquered this place or a little earlier, the name may have been changed. It is believed that the present temple may have been built during 12th Vikram century. No inscription on the idol is found.

It is possible that Pippalgachchha was found here. Long back, this place must have been a flourishing city with several Jain temples and thousands of Jain householder families. From bricks, stones and ruins discovered here from below the earth, it looks as if the place was a prosperous city upto 15th Vikram century. If researches in archeology are carried out here, much of ancient history can come to light. The idol of Sri Neminath Bhagwan is said to be working miracles. Every year a fair is held here on Kartik and Chaitra Poornima.

This place being an important affluent centre of Jainism in the past, many relics are still found from under the earth which are very artistic. The idol of Sri Neminath Bhagwan is very impressive. Almost all idols installed in this temple have been recovered from the earth and are believed to be of the period of king Samprati. They are ancient, undamaged, beautiful and worth seeing.

APPROACH – ROUTE :

Nearby railway station are Deesa 60 Kms, Bhildiiyaji 40 Kms and Bhamar also 40 Kms, from where buses are available to come here. This place is 22 Kms from the shrine of Tharad and 9 Kms from that of Dheema. Cars and buses can go upto the temple.
