PRESIDING DEITY AND LOCATION :

ANTIQUITY AND SALIENT FEATURES :

It is believed from inscriptions that this place was known in the distant past as Zadvali, Zavavali, Zazuli etc., In the temple there are inscriptions found dated Vikram years 1234 and 1236. There is a reference available that in Vikram year 1252 during the reign of king Sri Dharavarsh of Sri Chandravati town (At this time his minister was Sri Nagad who was proficient in art), renovations were carried out of the mandap of the temple and six more “Chowkis” were constructed. In one of the inscriptions in the temple, it is stated that the chief queen of kind Dharavarsh Shri Shringardevi (daughter of Raja Kalhandev Chouhan of Nadol) in Vikram year 1255 gave the gift of a well to this temple in the presence of a devout philanthropist named Sri Nirad. The inscription was drafted by Acharya Sri Tilakprabhsurihi. The well is still under the control and authority of the Jain community. People call it “Dev-ni-vav” (God’s well). An inscription is found in this well too.

The above is a testimony to emphasize that this temple is of a period before Vikram year 1252.At that time the Presiding Deity was Sri Mahavir Bhagwan. Thereafter during some renovations, the idol of Sri Adinath Bhagwan may have been ceremonially installed. This idol is also called Sri Shanthinath Bhagwan. In Vikram year 1499 Sri Megh poet in this composition “Tirthmala” has referred to this temple as the temple of Sri Shanthinath Bhagwan. On the idol is found an inscription dated Vikram year 1632. Once upon a time this place was a prosperous city as is evident from the stone inscriptions available. From time to time, faith and devotion shown towards this shrine by various kings is noteworthy.

Every year on Magsar Sukla 6, a flag is hoisted on the mast of the temple Sikhar. There is one more temple in the vicinity.

Ancient art on the arches pillars of the temple reminds one of the temples of Abu-Dilwara.
