VELAR TIRTH

SHRI VELAR TIRTH

PRESIDING DEITY AND LOCATION :

Sri Adishvar Bhagwan in white color, seated in a lotus posture, of height 75 Cms, located in the lap of hills outside the village of Velar 2 ½ Kms from the village of Chamuderi (Shve).

ANTIQUITY AND SALIENT FEATURES :

From the inscriptions carved on the pillars of the temple in Vikram year 1256, it is learnt that the ancient name of this place was “Badhilar”. One inscription mentions that in Vikram year 1265, Ram and Gosyak, the two affluent Jain householders of this place built a “Rangmandap” in this temple. The head Acharya of Nankiya Gachchha Sri Shantisurishvarji was present on the occasion. At this time the ruling king was Dhandhal.

It is evident from above that the temple existed prior to that period. On the present idol of the Presiding Deity there is an inscription dated Vikram year 1545. At that time of repairs and renovations, this idol must have been installed and ceremonially consecrated. Evidence is available for the latest repairs and renovations in Vikram year 1918.

In Vikram year 1265, it appears that Nankiya Gachchha had here their seat of authority. Annually Dhvaja is hoisted on Jyest Krishna 6. The location of the temple in the lap of the hills outside the village is extremely pleasant. The idol of the Lord is very impressive and beautiful. There is no other temple nearby.

APPROACH – ROUTE :

The nearby railway station of Nana is 3 Kms away where autos and taxis are available. Autos, taxis are available from the nearby village of Chamunderi. Cars and buses can go upto the temple. Sirohi is at a distance of 45 Kms from here.

AMENITIES FOR JAIN PILGRIMS :

There is a dharamshala near the temple but no facilities of any kind are available. It is advisable to stay at Nana and then come here for a visit.
