Samanar (meaning ‘Jain’ in Tamil) Hill or Jain Hills, 15 kms from Madurai, has several inscriptions and carvings of Jain Tirthankars. The inscriptions belong to the 9th – 10th century. There is a bas relief (a type of sculpture that has less depth to the faces and figures) of Bhagwan Mahavir.
